Anna Paquin was born in the city of Winnipeg, but was raised in Wellington. She made her acting debut as Flora McGrath in her character in the romance film The Piano. The role of Flora McGrath - the daughter to a Scottish muffled pianist from New Zealand at mid-19th Century was a part she won after she participated in an open audition. When she was nine years old her age, she was a novice or had no experience acting. When she was a teenager, her family moved from Canada to the United States. Paquin began her career as a child with a character in the Jane Eyre main character in the Franco Zeffirelli novel Jane Eyre, and then a major part of Fly Away Home. Paquin played Frankie Addams as a child in the television version of Carson McCullers novel The Member of the Wedding. Paquin also had a role of the queen of Spain in Steven Spielberg's 1997 film Amistad. She played teenagers on Hurlyburly (1998), She's All That (2000) and A Walk on the Moon (2000). The actress played the role of a groupie Polexia Aphrodisa in Almost Famous (2000).
